Custom Rules
Tell Benjamin what to send you and when — "Email me my budgets overview every night" — and it runs on schedule.
Not the event-driven alert rules in Plan Settings Rules (those fire when something happens); custom rules fire on a clock. Feature-flagged (custom_rules) — the section only appears for unlocked plans. CustomRulesCard.
This feature is behind a disabled flag, so this page carries no captures yet — the create page, rule rows, and edit screen get framed shots when the flag turns on for the docs account.
Where
Plan Settings → Rules → the Custom rules section at the bottom: one row per rule (its emoji icon, title, plain-words schedule, and a quiet On/Off status like the alert rules above), tap for details, long-press to delete, New custom rule to create. Rules created before emoji picking existed show a default icon based on what they do.
Create
New custom rule pushes a full page hosting the real Benjamin chat — the same turn-based conversation as the Ask Benjamin tab, with rule-specific prompt cards and a composer placeholder ("Email me my budgets overview every night…"). Because it's a real conversation, Benjamin can ask follow-ups, recommend against duplicates, and refine the rule across turns; the thread also shows up in the main chat history.
- Describe it — type the rule in your own words ("Send me a push every day at 10am with the price of gold") and send. Benjamin replies with what he'd set up, followed by an inline rule card you can edit (quick time presets, In-app/Push/Email delivery switches) before tapping Create rule. Benjamin also picks an emoji as the rule's icon — 🥇 for a gold-price rule, 🚗 for a car-payment reminder — which leads the card and every notification the rule sends. Rule times run on the timezone set on your profile, not whatever timezone your phone happens to be in.
- Templates — prompt cards that send a ready-made ask through the same chat: Nightly budgets email, Morning balances, Safe to spend each morning, Weekly spending recap, Monthly goal check-in, Daily gold price.
- Just ask Benjamin — the same works from the main chat: on unlocked plans, asking for anything scheduled ("remind me to pay rent on the 1st") produces the same confirmation card inline.
Custom rules are money-only. Ask for something that isn't about your finances or the markets — a movie trailer, the weather — and Benjamin declines with what he can do instead. Event-style asks ("alert me when a charge over $100 hits") get pointed at the alert rules above.
What a rule can do
- Your own data — budgets overview, spending summary, account balances, safe to spend, goal progress. These read the same numbers as the app screens.
- The web — market prices, rates, and financial news ("the current price of gold"), looked up fresh each run.
- Money reminders — a fixed nudge at a time you pick ("Remind me to pay my car payment tonight at 9pm"), one-time or recurring. Reminders still have to be about money — errands get declined.
Every run lands as a Home insight card; Push and Email are per-rule switches. The rule's emoji is the in-app card icon (the title stays clean) and also opens the push title and email subject, so a glance tells you which rule fired. Rules can run hourly at most (daily for web rules), each plan holds up to 10 active rules, and one-time rules ("tomorrow at 3pm") retire themselves after running.
Edit rule
Tapping a rule pushes the full-page Edit rule screen: the rule's emoji, title, and plain-words schedule up top, an Active/Paused card with the pause switch (and the next run time while active), quick time presets, In-app/Push/Email delivery switches (at least one must stay on; In-app off skips the activity-feed card while push/email still send), and Send a test now (a rate-limited test run). Everything autosaves as you flip it. The glass ellipsis in the top-right opens a native menu with Show history and Delete rule.
A rule that keeps failing pauses itself after five straight errors — the row says "Paused after repeated errors" and the edit screen's switch turns it back on.
Run history
Show history pushes a full-page view of the rule's recent runs: the rule title with a summary line ("5 runs · 4 delivered · 1 failed"), then runs grouped into day cards mirroring the transactions list (day title + count, hairline-divided rows). Each row shows the time and a badge per delivery method (green check delivered, red X failed, muted "Nothing new"); manually triggered runs carry a Test tag. Tapping a delivered row expands a mock of the longest notification the run sent — the full email (recipient, subject, body) when email delivered, otherwise the push banner, otherwise the in-app insight card.
